Over the past half-dozen years (2020–2026), martial arts media has undergone a notable evolution, expanding beyond stereotypical narratives and into a diverse selection of genre-blended or redefined tales presented in graphic novels, fantasy fiction and other independent publishing projects. While established franchises such as Marvel Comics’ Shang-Chi continued to showcase classic martial-arts heroes rooted in Chinese cultural traditions, a new generation of creators embraced wuxia, historical fantasy, supernatural horror, and global martial-arts influences.
Independent Kickstarter-funded projects like Rise of the Kung Fu Dragon Master, A Tiger’s Tale, Undead Kungfu Ghost Killer, and Martial Heroes demonstrate growing audience demand for creator-owned martial-arts stories that combine genre specific traditions with modern storytelling and visual styles. At the same time, prose novels such as Pearl City and Daughter of the Moon Goddess helped bring martial-hero archetypes, sword combat, and Asian-inspired mythology to mainstream fantasy readers. Collectively, these works reflect a broader trend toward greater cultural representation, genre experimentation, and independent publishing, signaling a vibrant new era for martial arts media.

To help readers better appreciate the growing variety and nuance found in this variety of publications we’ve curated a series of three reading lists – or perhaps they can be considered gift giving guides. Together they comprise three different entry points into martial arts media. These lists progress from accessible introductions, to works that emphasize character and culture, to stories that explore the deeper philosophical and symbolic traditions behind martial arts storytelling. They are titled –
- List 1: So You’ve Never Heard of Martial Arts?
- List 2: It’s Not Just About the Fight Scenes!
- List 3: The Philosophies, Themes and Imagery the West Has Only Just Noticed…
So You’ve Never Heard of Martial Arts?
These titles provide an accessible introduction to martial arts, focusing on heroes, training, perseverance, and adventure. They are ideal for readers new to the genre.
