Wulin (武林) is a term used both in wuxia fantasies and within real world of Chinese martial arts. It refers to the counterculture community of martial arts masters. The literal translation of Wulin is ‘martial forest’ however like so many aspects of Chinese culture, that’s just the simple short answer. To get to the roots of its meaning, we must see the forest for the trees.
Brad Graeber is a pillar in the field of Animation. He is the founder and CEO/CCO of Powerhouse Animation (Seis Manos, Masters of the Universe: Revelations, Castlevania, Blood of Zeus) as well as a lifelong Martial Artist and Kung Fu exponent.
It is said the 28th Patriarch of Buddhism, Bodhidharma was also know in China as Tamo (達 摩). As the founder of the Zen school of Buddhism and Shaolin Kung Fu, there are many firsts attributed to him. This is just one such tale.
Patrick and I had met prior to when I joined KUNG FU TAI CHI magazine. The first time was over dinner in 1996, back when I was working as a freelance writer. He had just come from the June+July cover shoot with Shi Yanming, the Shaolin Monk Sifu of RZA and the Wu-Tang Clan.
